Harvey Lawrence Ofentse Mashiloane, professionally known as Marcus Harvey, is a South African singer-songwriter, storyteller and producer.
Born in Johannesburg’s township of Alexandra in 1999, Marcus discovered his passion for music in his formative years, often performing ‘80s and ‘90s R&B and soul classics at his mother’s shebeen for family and community members. During this time, he was introduced to artists spanning a range of diverse genres, including the likes of Brenda Fassie, Selaelo Selota, Fela Kuti, Freddie Gwala, Michael Jackson, Lady Smith Black Mambazo andCulture Spears, among others – which he sites as influences on his music.
From twelve years-old, under the stage name Hipnautik, Marcus regularly participated in open-mic sessions and rap battles at school, before dropping out in the ninth grade to pursue music full-time.
In February 2020, Marcus independently released his debut album IAM MARCUS HARVEY: YOU DON’T KNOW ME YET. The project caught the attention of producer and South African music pioneer Kabza De Small. Within four days of its release, the album soared to the Apple Music Charts, securing the 75th spot in all genres and the 3rd position on the Alternative Top Charts. He was also awarded Apple Music Artist of The Month.
Following this success, Marcus released a sequel to his debut in the form of the EP YOU STILL DON’T KNOW ME (2021). The project offers a poignant exploration of the South African township condition, juxtaposed with the ethereal and soulful instrumentation has come to define Marcus’ eclectic style.
After a hiatus during which Marcus serenaded audiences on stages across the continent and also delivered a slew of anticipated collaborations with industry peers including Oscar Mbo, A-Reece, Maglera Doeboy, ShooterKhumz and a special appearance on Mashbeatz’s 2022 SAMA-winning album This Is Religion, Marcus returned with the third and final edition of his trilogy, NOW YOU KNOW ME.
Released to much critical acclaim and reaching the number one spot on the Apple Music all-genres charts, NOW YOU KNOW ME is a captivating journey through Harvey’s innovative soundscape, merging traditional South African rhythms with contemporary genres. The album features a rich tapestry of jazz, hip hop and Afrobeat; underpinned by a rich R&B-soul foundation – a testament to his ability to fuse cultural heritage with modern influences, creating a musical experience that resonates with a global audience. In just ten tracks, Marcus is able to touch on themes exploring identity, community, and self-discovery, resonating with listeners on a personal level.
